Groveton has an Advanced Academic Program for students in grades K-6. The school works with teachers to identify students that may benefit from the program, however, you can also request a screening of your child by contact the school directly.

Groveton has a partial Spanish Immersion Program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Students in the immersion program spend approximately half of each day learning mathematics, science, and health in Spanish. The other half of the day is spent learning social studies, language arts, and reading in English.

Groveton has a CALM (Children and Communities Achieving Lifelong Mindfulness) classroom. CALM’s mission is to provide stress relief, reduce attrition, and improve students overall wellness. In the CALM classroom, students learn to breathe with purpose, be present, and how to make better choices.

Other programs include music, which offers students the opportunity to join the school chorus, strings, and band.


Groveton is a larger elementary school with between 750-800 students enrolled each school year.  The school’s grades span kindergarten – 6th and has a 12.5 Student/Teacher Ratio.

Students attending Groveton Elementary School will move through the pyramid system to Sandburg Middle School which feeds into West Potomac High School. If you live in Groveton, Fairview, Stoneybrooke, Woodstone, and certain parts of the 22306 zip code your child will probably be assigned to Groveton.

School Hours

If you’re relocating from another part of the country you may be unfamiliar with the Fairfax County school calendar. School starts during the last week of August and ends in either the second or third week of June.

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Groveton’s hours are Monday through Friday are 8:55 to 3:40.

Groveton offers SACC which is a before and after-school program has with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

If you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child.

Parent Involvement

Parent involvement has been linked to student achievement. When looking for a school for your kids you’re also looking for a school that’s a good fit for you as well.

Groveton PTA supports the school through various fundraisers and events during the school year. The Groveton PTA also sponsors enrichment programs throughout the year.

The Groveton PTA, composed of parents and teachers, works cooperatively toward the goal of meeting each child’s academic needs. A growing active parent volunteer program provides daily enrichment to add to teachers’ endeavors. Groveton Elementary is truly a community school!
