Academics

Lorton Station is a center for Fairfax County Advanced Academic Placement. It offers full-time advanced placement for eligible students that focuses on four core content areas. The program is designed to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Over the last 15 years, enrollment in these AAP programs have more than triple which is caused a swell in both the number of schools turned into centers and the number of schools that offer Level IV programs.

Eligible students with Level IV academic placement whose base school doesn’t offer Level IV classes may attend Lorton Station.

Like most school’s in Fairfax County, Lorton Station has an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Lorton Station has 4 teachers on staff that focus on helping those students achieve academic success.

If you have a little one with special needs you may be able to enroll you child in the Headstart program at Lorton Station. The Lorton Station preschool is available for little ones with special needs between 2-5 years old.


Enrollment

There are usually anywhere from 900 to 950 students enrolled at each year, with a student-teacher ratio of 15.24 to 1. While the student-teacher ratio is close to that of other schools in the area Lorton Station’s student body is larger than most elementary schools. In fact, it has the highest enrollment numbers of all elementary schools in the Hayfield Pyramid.

Students living in many Lorton subdivisions attend Lorton Station Elementary. Lorton Station is in the Hayfield Pyramid. That means if your child goes to Lorton Station they’ll go to Hayfield Secondary for middle and high school in Alexandria.

School Hours

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. Lorton Station is open Monday through Friday are 9:20 to 4:05.  Doors open at 9:00 with the future teachers coming on at 8:55. If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Lorton Station offers SACC which is a before and after-school program has with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

If you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child.

Parent Involvement

Parent involvement has been linked to student achievement. When looking for a school for your kids you’re also looking for a school that’s a good fit for you as well.

Lorton Station PTA’s is made up of parents, teachers, and staff. The Lorton Station PTA host numerous fundraisers throughout the year to support the school. They have everything from restaurant night at area restaurants to fun runs.

In addition to the PTA, parents can volunteer to be a room parent, help out in the office, library and lunchroom. There are lots of opportunities to support your child and the school. Your level of involvement can be as much or as little as you like.
