4 Things About Mount Eagle Elementary

Programs

Mount Eagle is a Title I school, which means they receive additional resources to help students reach state and local education standards.

They have a Reading Recovery program that’s designed to help first graders learn to read and write. There’s also mathematics support as part of the Title I program. The mathematics support team provides resources to teachers and students to come up with an appropriate plan for each student that needs additional support.

Mount Eagle has an Advanced Academic Program for students in grades K-6. The school works with teachers to identify students that may benefit from the program, however, you can also request a screening of your child by contact the school directly. If your child is selected for the AAP program they’ll be pulled out with other students throughout the week for those subjects.

Like most school’s in Fairfax County, Mount Eagle has an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Mount Eagle has 4 instructors on staff that focus on helping those students achieve academic success.

Enrollment

Mount Eagle Elementary is one of the smaller schools in the Alexandria/Fairfax areas.  There are just over 400 students enrolled at Mount Eagle Elementary each school year. The student-teacher ratio in 2016-2017 was 11.2 to 1 which is below the state average.

Students living in the 22303 zip code and in these subdivisions Jefferson Manor, Fair Haven, and South Kings Station may attend Mount Eagle Elementary. Students from Mount Eagle Elementary School feed into Twain Middle and Edison High School.

Schedule

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. Mount Eagle’s hours are Monday through Friday from 8:45 to 3:30 from preschool to sixth grade.

If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Mount Eagle offers SACC which is a before and after-school program with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

Fortunately, if you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child.

Parent Involvement

Parent involvement has been linked to student achievement. When looking for a school for your kids you’re also looking for a school that’s a good fit for you as well.

Mount Eagle has an active PTO made up of parents, teachers, and staff working together to help every child fulfill their potential through family engagement and advocacy. The Mount Eagle PTO has a website with a calendar of upcoming events, school announcements and list of fundraisers.

In addition to the PTO, parents can reach out to the school to volunteer as room parents, to help in the office, library or lunchroom. There are lots of opportunities to support your child and the school. Your level of involvement can be as much or as little as you like.
