4 Things About Oak View Elementary

Oak View has an Advanced Academic Program for students in grades K-6. The school works with teachers to identify students that may benefit from the program, however, you can also request a screening of your child by contact the school directly.

Oak View is a Local Level IV program for Fairfax County Advanced Academic Placement for grades 3rd-6th. Level IV advanced placement is a full-time program. Students that qualify for Level IV Services have the option of attending White Oaks or remaining at Oak View, their neighborhood school.

The biggest difference between the two programs is students enrolled. All students in full-time, center-based classes like White Oaks have been identified as center-eligible by a central selection committee and will be coming from several neighborhood schools. In a Local Level IV classroom at Oak View, the students are a mix of students who are center-eligible and high achieving students who are capable of working at an advanced level.

There are many activities for students before, during, and after school:

  • Band and Strings – students in the upper grades may choose to participate in one of these electives in addition to general music
  • Safety Patrol – Patrols support the staff and crossing guard during arrival and dismissal.
  • Global Plus – Before/after school enrichment program offering instruction in a foreign language. The program lasts between 10 to 20 weeks and differs from the in-school foreign language program offered at some other area schools.
  • SCA (Student Council Association) – made up of officers and representatives from each classroom. The SCA is a leadership and service organization that conducts service projects and promotes school spirit through leadership projects.

There are roughly 850 students enrolled at Oak View Elementary each school year between kindergarten and 6th grade. Students living in Fairfax Station, Fairfax, and Clifton may possibly be zoned for Oak View.

We always recommend you check out the Fairfax County Boundary Locator to confirm the schools serving a specific address before making any decision to buy or rent a home.

Most elementary schools in Fairfax County feed into one middle school and then students move on to the high school at the top of that pyramid. That isn’t the case here with Oak View. Students attending Oak View Elementary School will move through the pyramid system to Robinson Middle School or Frost Middle School which feed into Robinson High School and Woodson High School, respectively.

School Hours

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. Laurel Ridge’s hours are Monday through Friday are 8:30 to 3:15 for grades K – 6th.

If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Oak View offers SACC which is a before and after-school program has with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

If you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child.

Parent Involvement

Parent involvement has been linked to student achievement. When looking for a school for your kids you’re also looking for a school that’s a good fit for you as well.

The Oak View PTA supports a number of activities in the community including social events and fundraisers. Each school year the PTA offers a number of fee-based after-school enrichment programs. They vary year to year and have included art, cheer, chess, dance, robotics, and running in past years.

The school welcomes parents to set up a time with your child’s teacher to volunteer in the classroom, read a book to the class, or come in to have lunch with your child. Your level of involvement can be as much or as little as you like.
