South County High offers a variety of programs for academic advancements, career prep, and extracurricular interest. Whether your child’s interest includes the military, higher education, or trade South County have a program in place to encourage and nurture that interest.

There are numerous programs and activities available for students no matter their interest: newspaper and yearbook committee, Math Team, Model Union Nations, Orchestra, Chorus, a few honor societies, and a host of other clubs and organizations. 

South County has an Army JROTC program. The JROTC is a leadership education program designed to teach leadership skills, character development, self-discipline, and citizenship.

The school also has an apprenticeship program in addition to career and technical education (CTE) for a child that may not be interested in going to college but would rather focus on a trade. 

Foreign Languages

All Fairfax County schools offer French and Spanish language classes. South County is also one of the only schools in the area that offers Latin. The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) approved awarding students who attain proficiency in English and one or more world languages by high school graduation with the Virginia Seal of Biliteracy.

After School Activities

Like most other high schools in the area, Mount Vernon has facilities on campus to host most athletic competitions. There’s a gymnasium, football field, soccer field, and baseball field.

South County has a team for every athlete in every season.

There’s cheerleading, cross country, dance, field hockey, football, golf, volleyball in the fall. As winter approaches and temperatures drop they move on to indoor sports like basketball, dance team, gymnastics, indoor track, swim & dive, and wrestling.  By the time spring rolls around students are back outside trying out for baseball, crew, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field.

The forensic team (public speaking and debate) and scholastic bowl are also under the athletic department umbrella.


Student enrollment at South County High is about 2,200 students per school year with a student-teacher ratio of 15.6 to 1.

Students attending South County High School usually attend South County Middle for the 7th and 8th grades.
