In Fairfax County schools gifted services are available to students that show exceptional performance capability in academic, intellectual, and creative endeavors through Advanced Academic Programs (AAP). Students that were identified for AAP in grade school can continue on through the program.

The school works with teachers to identify students that may benefit from the program, however, you can also request a screening of your child by contact the school directly.

Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher can apply for membership of the National Junior Honor Society. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to recognize those students who demonstrate excellence in Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship.

Twain Middle offers the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program to all of its students. All students at Twain, grades 7-8, will participate in the program. Students who will attend Thomas Edison High School continue the program in grades 9-10.

The IB program encourages students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Mark Twain Middle operates on a block schedule where students alternate classes depending on the day of the week. In-class time is roughly one and a half hours rather than attending every class each day for 45 minutes. Here’s an example of what your student can expect on a day to day basis.

After School Care

Twain has an after school program with activites that vary from day to day. Students involved in the program can participate in everything from the 4H club to yearbook committee, writing club, sports and recreation,  and even homework assistance.

There’s even a late bus for partipants three days each week. Parent have to pick up there child the other two days when the late bus isn’t available.
