4 Things About Wakefield Forest Elementary

Wakefield Forest has a Foreign Language in an Elementary School (FLES) program making it one of only a small percentage of Fairfax County elementary schools that offers foreign language. Students in Kindergarten through 6th-grade work on developing basic communicative skills in Spanish while reinforcing content from other subjects.

Wakefield Forest is a Local Level IV program for Fairfax County Advanced Academic Placement for grades 3rd-6th. Students that qualify for Level IV Services have the option of attending Canterbury Woods or remaining at Wakefield Forest, their neighborhood school.

The biggest difference between the two programs is students enrolled. All students in full-time, center-based classes like Lorton Station have been identified as center-eligible by a central selection committee and will be coming from several neighborhood schools. In a Local Level IV classroom at Wakefield Forest, the students are a mix of students who are center-eligible and high achieving students who are capable of working at an advanced level.

Over the last 15 years, enrollment in these AAP programs have more than triple which is caused a swell in both the number of schools turned into centers and the number of schools that offer Level IV programs.

STEAM education in FCPS is an inquiry approach to teaching and learning where students integrate science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics to solve problems.

There are many activities for students before, during, and after school:

  • Band, Chorus, and Strings – students in the upper grades may elect to participate in one or more music program in addition to general music
  • Safety Patrol – Patrols support the staff and crossing guard during arrival and dismissal.
  • Morning News Show- student anchors run a morning news program each school day

Wakefield Forest is a part of the Woodson Pyramid. That means students move on to Frost middle for grades 7 and 8 then Woodson High School for grades 9 through 12. Wakefield Forest typically has about 675 students enrolled each school year.

Wakefield Forest services students living in a number of areas in Annandale, including parts of the Chestnut Hill, Chapel Square, Oak Hill, Wakefield Chapel Estates, and Wakefield Forest subdivisions. We always recommend you check out the Fairfax County Boundary Locator to confirm the schools serving a specific address before making any decision to buy or rent a home.

School Hours

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. Little Run’s hours are Monday through Friday are 8:40 to 3:25 for grades K – 6.

If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Wakefield Forest offers SACC which is a before and after-school program has with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

If you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child.

Parent Involvement

Parent involvement has been linked to student achievement. When looking for a school for your kids you’re also looking for a school that’s a good fit for you as well.

The Wakefield Forest PTA supports a number of efforts to enrich the lives of the students, teachers, and families at the school. They sponsor a number of popular activities each year including social events and fundraisers.

Each school year the PTA offers a number of fee-based after-school enrichment programs. They vary year to year and range from science focused to athletics and the arts.

There are lots of opportunities to support your child and the school by volunteering in the lunchroom, office, and classrooms. Your level of involvement can be as much or as little as you like. You can sign up to volunteer on the school website which is linked below.
